About

British born, Annemarie Waugh is a New York-based artist who combines painting and printmaking techniques, using imagery inspired by nature, imagination and memories. The movement of line, the repetition of patterns, and the relationships of colors are her primary focus. Waugh’s work melds the abstract with the figurative. While primarily acrylic, they often contain graphite-drawn figures and animals, and may be triggered by a narrative, as in the series “Little Red,” and “Alice.” Her most recent installation, “Hanging on a thread,” was inspired by her own observations of nature. Impetus for her works can be simply her memories of childhood in England, as in her installation “Across the pond.”  In bright, often bold and vivid colors, her paintings invite the viewer in, through dappled forests, past foxglove-strewn gardens, across imaginary oceans. Over all, her works are infused with mystery, and convey a sense of imbalance. They can appear as fragments from daydreams, and reflect her continued fascination with moments of fragile beauty in our contemporary world.
